ILM VFX artists Andrew Whitehurst and Robert Weaver open up about de-aging Harrison Ford in Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, including why it took three years and 100-plus VFX artists to do so. The fifth and final installment of the adventure franchise saw Ford don the fedora and wield the whip one last time alongside Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Mads Mikkelsen, Boyd Holbrook, Antonio Banderas, John Rhys-Davies, and Karen Allen.
With Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny opening during Indy's WWII adventures, Whitehurst and Weaver opened up to Variety about the incredible process to de-age Ford's Indiana Jones during the prologue. Using a combination of pre-existing tools and new techniques developed for its production led to ILM FaceSwap, a new toolset using a vast library of images and assets from on-set photography, archive footage, and real-world and digital assets to create a younger Ford.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT De-Aged Harrison Is Both An Impressive & Controversial VFX Evolution Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny isn't the first effort by ILM to use digital VFX to recreate or de-age an actor's appearance.
As time has progressed though, the practice has received increased scrutiny from audiences and voices within the industry. Alongside increasing reports of harmful crunch times being seen throughout the VFX industry leading to rushed effects, many members of the audience are questioning whether it would be best for studios to instead recast these iconic roles with younger stars.
