Zatanna is one of the most fascinating characters in all DC mythology, and yet her appearances have not always been representative of that. If nothing else, Zatanna’s costume designs commonly lack a sense of creativity or imagination beyond fishnets and top hats , which is disappointing considering how creative and imaginative the character is.
Thankfully, recent redesigns for Zatanna are taking the necessary strides to reimagine the Princess of Prestidigitation with bold new looks that are far less derivative or timid. Absolute Wonder Woman’s Zatanna redesign, for example, has stripped her of the magician aesthetic and stage presence that she usually boasts, while a brand-new ongoing Zatanna series written and illustrated by Jamal Campbell is taking her role as Sorceress Supreme rather literally with a design that leans fully into her magical prowess as “Prime Magus” of the DC universe. Zatanna is DC’s New Prime Magus DC Next Level’s Zatanna will see the role of Prime Magus, presumed that this will be DC’s equivalent of Marvel’s Sorcerer Supreme, bestowed onto the Homo magi sorceress. This has resulted in the debut of a new look for Zatanna, and it is quite distinct from any other costume she’s ever had due to it being imbued with a ton of magic, and it’s a far cry from the ordinary tuxedos or corsets she’s accustomed to wearing. This redesign reprises the fishnets and thigh-high boots, sure, but readers might not be able to instantly guess who this character is on first glance anymore due to how regal, colorful, and ethereal she looks as Prime Magus. In this look, Zatanna’s hair flows into a long cape that is “brimming with magic” on its underside. Zatanna’s Prime Magus costume has “formal,” “superhero,” and “casual” options, with the potential for plenty more. The solicitation for Zatanna #1 is as follows: “Zatanna Zatara embarks on her greatest tour yet! As the newest and first Prime Magus in millennia, it is now Zatanna’s sworn responsibility to oversee and guide the world of magic. All eyes are on her. How will she accomplish this grand task? How will she shoulder this heaviest of responsibilities? How will she confront the horrors waiting in forgotten histories? With a wink, a flourish, and a whole lot of magic! All-star writer/artist Jamal Campbell is back for an encore with the mistress of magic as she finally gets her own ongoing series!” This is a Natural and Epic Evolution Zatanna’s leveling up via her new Prime Magus role, and it will be neat to see what that actually looks like in Zatanna #1. She’s already an incredibly powerful sorceress, for instance, and thus it is unclear how largely this will extrapolate the role of magic in the DC universe, as well. Jamal Campbell’s ongoing Zatanna run will be in-continuity, too. This means it could intersect with other Prime Earth/Earth-0 shenanigans, plunging canon into magic even further.
