In spite of the Swamp Thing TV show's failure, there's one element of its story that should return for the DC Universe's upcoming movie adaptation.
The DC Universe's upcoming Swamp Thing movie may avoid many of the flaws that killed the 2019 show, but there's one key element from the series that could help it succeed. Swamp Thing is a dark and tragic figure from DC Comics that, while not as famous as most members of the Justice League, still has a long comic book history and a well-defined lore. The Protector of the Green is kindhearted, but mysterious and deadly when nature is at stake.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Swamp Thing's horror roots have remained a significant part of the character's identity in DC Comics. For instance, Alan Moore's Saga of the Swamp Thing series put into question the blurry line between man and monster with the use of body horror, demonic possessions, and Hell itself.
DC Universe's Swamp Thing Movie Can Beat The TV Show The 2019 Swamp Thing series had all the makings of a groundbreaking superhero TV show, as it took a more grounded but sinister approach at the source material than shows like The Flash, Smallville, or Marvel's Agents of SHIELD, and it settled on a well-defined genre without constant references to its parent franchise.
That said, the upcoming Swamp Thing movie will most assuredly have the advantage of a bigger budget and a more ambitious script that could make bolder decisions with the character. Its connections to the larger DC Universe can also make the character more appealing for general audiences, and a possible team-up between Swamp Thing and the Justice League Dark could result in a popular cinematic event that brings the dark DC hero to the forefront.
