Superman's role in the DC Universe has been a focal point of James Gunn's plans from the moment that he and Peter Safran took over DC Studios. This included making headlines early on by confirming that Henry Cavill is out as the Man of Steel.
James Gunn reiterated in February 2023 that DC Studios was not yet working on recasting Superman. A month later, the writer/director confirmed on Twitter that he had not met with a single actor about playing the part. He did reveal that some private lists about who could be considered were being prepared and that he was in the process of prepping material for auditions to take place. These revelations in March 2023 offered a substantial update on the Superman casting process.
If filming begins on Superman: Legacy in early 2024 ahead of its June 2025 release, the DC Universe's new Superman actor needs to be found relatively soon. Superhero movie roles typically require months of preparation from the actors to transform their bodies and get into "superhero shape." It is likely that whoever is cast as James Gunn's Clark Kent will already have a strong physique to build on, but the rigorous training to get in Superman-level shape will take months.
