Spoilers for Batman: Gotham Knights – Gilded City #1 by DC ComicsIn a new miniseries from DC Comics, the upcoming video game world of Gotham Knights gets further explored. Batman: Gotham Knights - Gilded City tells the story of what happened to Batman and his final case before his death.
EN: I wanted the main threat in Gilded City to be something so big that even Batman couldn't handle it alone. The Golden Iris Virus makes its victims obsessed with things that they want but don't have and, with all his wealth and influence, that's an impulse that Batman experiences very differently. Over the decades, Gotham's been shown to have intense socioeconomic stratification and I wanted to gesture at the idea that such a status quo gets built over decades of exploitation.
Which character did you enjoy writing most in this series? Any surprise faces we can expect to turn up throughout the story? EN: Gilded City offers up some thematic pretext for the journey that Nightwing, Batgirl, Robin, and Red Hood go on in Gotham Knights. I kind of thought of it as a stream of snapshots that shows how they relate to Batman and each other. I wanted it to feel like you're eavesdropping on some very messy family therapy sessions while also getting a history lesson on a pivotal moment in Gotham City's tumultuous past.
