Arguably the greatest animated series of the 1990s is joining the ranks of several Cartoon Network shows on a free streaming platform this March. Most of these shows were previously available on HBO Max, but have gradually been removed from the service over the last few months.
In March, classics such as The Powerpuff Girls, Ben 10, and Dexter's Laboratory will debut on a new platform, along with slightly more esoteric shows such as Pinky and the Brain, Ed, Edd n Eddy, and Courage the Cowardly Dog. Among these titles is a show that began as a spin-off, but quickly developed an identity of its own. It remains highly influential not only in the medium of animation, but in superhero storytelling as a whole. The show in question is Batman: The Animated Series, which was developed as an offshoot of Tim Burton's blockbuster 1989 movie Batman. In its original form, the show ran for 85 episodes across two seasons, from 1993 to 1995. However, it has since inspired several follow-ups and spin-offs of its own. Batman: The Animated Series was created by Bruce Timm and Eric Radomski, with Paul Dini memorably creating the character of Harley Quinn for it. The show made actors Kevin Conroy, Mark Hamill, and Arleen Sorkin synonymous with their characters — Batman, Joker, and Harley. Years before Greg Berlanti's Arrowverse and the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Batman: The Animated Series started a shared franchise of animated superhero shows that also included Superman: The Animated Series and Justice League. Batman: The Animated Series was followed by The New Batman Adventures and Batman Beyond. It served as inspiration for the Arkham series of video games, and became the defining Batman project of the 1990s with its trademark"dark deco" animation style. More recently, Robert Pattinson cited Mask of the Phantasm as having influenced his portrayal of the superhero in Matt Reeves' The Batman. Timm, Reeves, J.J. Abrams, and Ed Brubaker developed a follow-up animated series titled Batman: Caped Crusader, which debuted on Prime Video in 2024. You can watch Batman: The Animated Series on Tubi from March 1.
