Washington's Deputy Mayor of Public Safety Chris Geldart is out of a job after he resigned amid assault charges and questions over his living situation.
Geldart allegedly assaulted a personal trainer during a verbal dispute after he opened his car door into the victim's vehicle.Mayor Muriel Bowser said during a media availability on Wednesday that she accepted his resignation, referring to him as a"capable and efficient public servant." City Administrator Kevin Donahue will serve in the interim until a new deputy mayor is appointed.
"I’m saddened to say that I have accepted the resignation of Deputy Mayor Chris Geldart,” Bowser said. “But I’m proud of the work we’ve done together over the last eight years.” He also was under review by the district after the criminal report relating to the alleged assault listed him as living in Falls Church, Virginia. Washington's legal code requires high-level local officials to live within the district during their term.
Bowser did not expand on her review of his living arrangements. She said the resignation was a mutual decision between Geldart and herself, as they both decided the conversations surrounding his assault were distracting them from their work in Washington.Geldart is scheduled to appear for an arraignment hearing on Monday for his criminal charge.
