DC's Green Lantern lore has a new color of Lantern, complete with their own emotional powers - and sadly for them, their debut sees them face off against Lobo.
In Green Lantern lore, heroes and villains draw power from the emotional spectrum. Green Lanterns utilize will, Red Lanterns harness rage, Blue Lanterns embody hope, etc. Each Lantern type is slightly different in how they access and utilize their part of the emotional spectrum, and now there's a new shade of lantern to take into account.
Green Lantern Lore Introduces the Mauve Lantern In today's Lobo #3 - from Skottie Young, Jorge Corona, Nicoletta Baldari, Jean-François Beaulieu and Nate Piekos - Lobo reminisces about a childhood encounter with a Mauve Lantern. The story introduces Francis Dalex, a trainee Green Lantern whose abiding sense of glee has transformed their powers, turning them into the first and only Mauve Lantern.
Thanks to this transformation, the Mauve Lantern can summons harmless constructs intended to spread glee, attempting to prevent a young Lobo's rampage with flowers and teddy bears. While this initially seems like a downgrade, the Mauve Lantern's powers are fully realized when Lobo steals their ring. Because he derives glee from chaos and mayhem, Lobo is able to summon an army of deadly constructs. What Does the Mauve Lantern Mean for Green Lantern Lore?
Lobo #3 is a deliberately comedic issue, but that doesn't mean the Mauve Lantern should be dismissed. Plenty of comic concepts have been introduced in jest then built on by later creators, and fans should expect to see the idea of a Mauve Lantern return soon, especially because there are several unique aspects to their powers. It seems that unlike Green Lanterns, Mauve Lanterns aren't able to summon any construct they imagine - only those that bring them genuine glee.
It's a power that's harmless in the hands of a hero, but lethal in the hands of a villain - indeed, it would be terrifying to see what someone like the Joker could do with this ring. Most startling of all is the reveal that a Green Lantern can transform into a Mauve Lantern if they are overcome with glee - rings are custom-made weaponry that don't usually have the ability to change color, making this an interesting and unique wrinkle to 'Mauve Lantern' lore.
This Isn't Lobo's First Time with a Lantern Ring Other than Dalex, Lobo is the only character so far to become a Mauve Lantern, but that's not the only Lantern ring he's been capable of wielding. In the past, Lobo has owned both a Red and Green Lantern ring. In his inimitable style, Injustice saw Lobo summon a decidedly family-unfriendly construct to take down Atrocitus.
Lobo has often pushed at the boundaries of DC canon, and his latest adventure adds the comical new concept of a Mauve Lantern to DC lore. However, by fleshing out this new type of Lantern's powers and attributing a color to an otherwise unexplored element of the emotional spectrum, Lobo just casually changed Green Lantern lore forever. Lobo #3 is available now from DC Comics.
