[LISTEN] In facilitating infrastructure development across the SADC region ‘we don’t get fiscal allocations, even though we are an SOE,’ - DBSA_Bank's chief economist ZephNhleko on MoneywebNOW with SimonPB. Download the podcast below. Moneyweb
SIMON BROWN: I’m chatting with Zeph Nhleko, chief economist at the Development Bank of Southern Africa. Zeph, I appreciate the time today. It’s the 40th anniversary of the [founding of the] Development Bank of Southern Africa, the DBSA – since 1997 a development finance institution. What’s important here for folks to understand is that you really do operate as a bank. This isn’t for handouts or grants. You’re facilitating infrastructure across the country.
SIMON BROWN: You mentioned that, because the name [includes] ‘Southern Africa’, so it’s beyond South Africa. How much of your work is beyond the borders of South Africa and to the rest of the continent? ZEPH NHLEKO: That’s right. We focus on two broad sectors, the economic sectors and social sectors. In the economic sectors we focus on the network industries, which means we deal with transport or we fund transport, we deal with energy, we deal with ICT, we deal with water. On the social side we deal with education, we deal with health and we deal with human settlement. That’s the infrastructure part of it.
SIMON BROWN: And to your point you are state-owned, but you don’t get money from the state coffers. You manage yourself.
