Lost sleep from daylight saving time can pose serious health issues and has been linked to increased accidents, stroke and heart attacks. If you feel sleepy on Sunday after the change, take a nap for 15 to 20 minutes (but not too close to bedtime).
CLEVELAND, Ohio – Springing the clocks forward for daylight saving time can cause people to lose the spring in their step, sometimes for several weeks.. Winding the clocks will cost us an hour of sleep, something medical experts say can affect your health.
“The inside clock, the clock inside our brain that regulates sleep and wakefulness, is typically a very reliable, periodic process and having just a one-hour shift can actually affect us pretty significantly,” according toLost sleep can be a serious issue, too. Daylight saving time has been linked to an increase in car accidents, stroke and heart attacks, according to the Clinic.
The effects can linger, too, leading to sleep deprivation and sleepiness in most people that can persist for days to weeks, according toPlan ahead. Make sure you are getting enough sleep on a consistent basis. Go to bed about 15 minutes early each night for several nights leading up to the time change so you are well rested when it comes.
Avoid disruptions. Drinking alcohol or caffeine before bed, or eating a heavy meal late at night, for example, can disrupt your sleep. If you feel sleepy on Sunday after the change, take a nap for 15 to 20 minutes. But not too close to bedtime. And assess how the nap affects your nighttime sleep. For some, it can make sleeping more difficult. For others, it can be revitalizing without affecting nighttime sleep.Generally, people should try to have a regular sleep schedule, going to bed and waking up at the same time each day, Ziegler said.
