) Davis accepted with a 16-minute-long speech about the challenges she’s faced in the industry—and how she had to make some tough decisions when choosing roles. “Let me tell you something, not to be a contradiction, but when I started off in my career, I took a lot of jobs because of the money,” she said. “Sometimes, for a dark-skinned, Black woman with a wide nose and big lips, that’s all there was out there. When Steenburgen took the stage to hand the 2024 Carol Burnett Award to her husband, she began by detailing the earliest days of their relationship, saying her assumption that he was a “slick guy” was upended the more she got to know him. “How wrong I was,” she said. “Slick guys don’t say ‘gosh-a-rooney’ after making love,” then, gently wincing, said “I’d like to apologize to my granddaughters now.” In his acceptance speech, Danson said, “I have to admit I’ve always had a confusing relationship with awards.
