As the mogul takes the helm of the newly minted Hollywood giant, the CEO makes his first big moves and signals a less formal approach: “He wants to call you … and get an answer.”

Now Warner Bros. Discovery CEO, Zaslav has chosen top execs who consist mostly of his lieutenants from Discovery, but also four WarnerMedia execs who are sticking around, three of them leading the entertainment assets that made the merger appealing: HBO and HBO Max chief Casey Bloys, Warner Bros. TV chief Channing Dungey and Warner Bros. Pictures chief Toby Emmerich.

At WB Discovery, in comparison, the message seems to be that Zaslav himself will play a hands-on role and give top creative execs direct access, while leaving the greenlighting of film and TV projects to them. Zaslav lauded the new structure when he unveiled the executive team, touting its “fewer layers, more accountability and a singular strategic focus as a global pure-play content company.

It was a theme he would return to in town halls with Discovery and WarnerMedia staff, and on earnings calls, where he would pitch the creative mission as a critical piece of Warner Bros. history. “Warner Bros. has been the greatest creative company in the world, the place that the talent, want to come, the place where they feel nourished and supported. That’s the history of Warner Brothers,” he said on Discovery’s second quarter 2021 earnings call.

Since the deal close, Zaslav has been holding informal meetand-greets in locales like New York, Washington, D.C., Atlanta and Los Angeles. A source who attended one of Zaslav’s meetings with CNN staff says he told them that he believes there is an opportunity for CNN to expand farther around the world and that he views the brand as a reputation booster, rather than an asset meant to maximize margins.

And WarnerMedia international chief Gerhard Zeiler will take over international responsibilities from Perrette.
