We chat with TheBigDoorPrize showrunner David West Read about adapting the novel for screen and modernizing its magical machine in the new AppleTVPlus series:
Based on M.O. Walsh’s novel of the same name, Apple TV+'s newest series The Big Door Prize introduces the fictional town of Deerfield to the mystical Morpho machine. Suddenly appearing one night in the local convenience store, the mystery machine possesses the power to decipher one's true potential for only $2 and a social security number. With almost everyone in town lining up to have their fortunes told, lives are changing from one day to the next — but not always for the best.
David West Read: The novel is a great jumping-off point for this series because it has this amazing premise of, "What if there was a machine that for $2 could tell you your life's potential?" What I loved about it as a TV series is there are so many different ways to explore that through different characters and different experiences, depending on where they are in their lives and how happy they think they are with their lives.
David West Read: I love stories set in small towns. This also feels very specific to a small town, where there's something new and it's so exciting. Everyone finds out about it immediately, and everyone wants to try it, whether it's a donut shop or the Morpho machine.
