The drama intensifies with David Tennant's TV return.
David Tennant continues to be television royalty with his Disney series. Ever since his portrayal as the Tenth Doctor in the BBC's beloved sci-fi series, Doctor Who, Tennant has been rocking the television circuit, such as Broadchurch and the Netflix Marvel series Jessica Jones.
While the star has his fair share of playing heroes, he has also showcased his versatility by bringing to life a merciless antagonist. Now, Tennant reprises his villainous role as Lord Tony Baddingham in Rivals, which just returned with its sophomore installment. After the first three episodes dropped, Rivals season 2 landed at no. 7 on Hulu's television streaming charts, just behind The Testatments and Perfect Crown .
While that reflects on just the United States performance, FlixPatrol also revealed that the series is also no. 7 on Disney+ worldwide. While the series is no. 1 in Ireland and the United States, it's also in the top 10 charts in Australia, Belgium, Canada, Germany, and Spain. It's worth noting that Rivals is available internationally on Disney+ since Hulu is not available outside the United States.
Based on the books written by Jilly Cooper, the raunchy series follows the rivalry between Tony Baddinham, who is in charge of the television station Corinium, and Rupert Black . Their clash only intensifies as new players, like the journalist Declan O'Hara and Cameron Cook , come into play, while personal relationships are tested. Season 2 continues that feud, with Tony even hungrier for revenge following the events of the licensing rights.
In addition to returning stars like Hassell and Turner, the sophomore installment also brings new faces like Hayley Atwell, Rupert Everett, Maxim Ays, Bobby Lockwood, Eliot Salt, Amanda Lawrence, and Olive Tennant. When season 1 premiered in 2024, Rivals cracked the top 10 charts based on Reelgood's data and went on to win an International Emmy Award for Drama Series. Tennant also earned a Leading Actor nomination at the British Academy Television Awards.
As a result of season 1's success, Disney renewed Rivals for season 2, which includes an episode upgrade of 12 episodes. Those episodes will be dropped in two batches, with the first six episodes airing between May 15 and June 5. Rivals has earned critical acclaim, with season 1 grabbing a very strong 95% critical score and a 90% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.
Season 2 has been equally praised for intensifying elements of the raunchy drama, with a perfect 100% score. So far, Rivals season 2 reviews agree that the new episodes are even more dramatic, while also giving some personal depth for characters like Rupert, thanks to the increased episode count.
Meanwhile, it's not the only Tennant series that's made its return to streaming. Just recently, Prime Video released the series finale of Good Omens, which stars Tennant as the demon Crowley. Despite mixed reviews for season 3, the fantasy series has landed on Prime Video's streaming charts at No. 5. While Rivals season 2 will continue to stream new episodes on Hulu and Disney+, Tennant has a handful of television projects in the works, including Time season 3 and Hide.
Rivals season 2 will drop episodes 4–6 weekly on Hulu and Disney+, but the remaining schedule has yet to be announced. 9.5/10 4/10 Rivals 10 stars 9 stars 8 stars 7 stars 6 stars 5 stars 4 stars 3 stars 2 stars 1 star Like Follow Followed TV-MA Drama Romance Release Date October 18, 2024 Network Disney+ Directors Dee Koppang O'Leary, Alexandra Brodski, Elliot Hegarty Writers Clare Naylor, Mimi Hare, Kefi Chadwick, Dare Aiyegbayo, Dominic Treadwell-Collins, Laura Wade, Marek Horn, Sophie Goodhart Cast See All Powered by Expand Collapse
