DA’s David Maynier to move to Western Cape provincial legislature

DA finance spokesman David Maynier will leave the opposition benches in the National Assembly for provincial politics in the Western Cape following the elections in May.

He is placed at No 4 on his party’s list in the Western Cape, the only province the DA governs. The party is expected to remain in power in the province after the elections on May 8, despite a turbulent 2018 in which it was embroiled with its former Cape Town mayor Patricia de Lille. The party hopes to grow its support in the province from its 2014 numbers of 59.38%, which gave it 26 seats in the provincial legislature.“I would like, hopefully, to transition from saying something in opposition in the National Assembly, to actually doing something in the provincial government in the Western Cape,” Maynier said in response to why he wanted to make the move.

The City of Tshwane’s new mayor Stevens Mokgalapa is also on both the lists to the National Assembly and the Gauteng provincial legislature, but it is understood that he would not take up these positions.
