Former New York Dolls singer David Johansen is facing severe health challenges, including stage 4 cancer, a brain tumor, and a recent fall that broke his back. These setbacks have left him bedridden and in need of round-the-clock care, straining his finances. The Sweet Relief Musicians Fund has launched a campaign to assist Johansen with his medical expenses, physical therapy, and daily living costs.
has been fighting through several setbacks regarding his health. The former New York Dolls singer was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer and a brain tumor in 2020.
Johansen, 75, also suffered a fall in November, where he broke his back in two places. The singer is currently “bedridden and incapacitated” and commands round-the-clock care. These misfortunes have put a strain on Johansen’s finances. The Sweet Relief Musicians Fund, a 501-CS nonprofit charity, has launched theThe funds raised will go to the “singer’s physical therapy, full-time nursing needs, and daily living expenses.” Sweet Relief also released a special David Johansen T-shirt, the proceeds of which will go to his treatment.
“We’ve been living with my illness for a long time, still having fun, seeing friends and family, carrying on, but this tumble the day after Thanksgiving really brought us to a whole new level of debilitation,” Johansen said in a statement. “This is the worst pain I’ve ever experienced in my entire life. I’ve never been one to ask for help, but this is an emergency. Thank you.”
Sweet Relief executive director Aric Steinberg also provided some thoughts. “Directed Artist Funds can provide a meaningful solution when the community rallies around the recipient, and we anticipate that David’s community will be eager to help here, said Steinberg. “His influence on the musical landscape with the New York Dolls is indelible, and his career as an actor and an artist has touched many people around the world.
