David Harbour thinks Hopper should get a happy ending on Stranger Things: 'I think he deserves peace, so I’d like to see that achieved.'
Actor David Harbour recently shared that he wants a happy ending for Hawkins Police Chief, Jim Hopper, in Stranger Things season 5. After Will Byers goes missing under mysterious circumstances, Hopper's investigation leads him to a government conspiracy involving a parallel dimension harboring terrifying monsters with a little telepathic girl at the center of it all. As the conspiracy expands, Hopper finds himself raising Eleven and sacrificing himself to save his friends.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY In a recent interview with Total Film, Harbour revealed that he wants Hopper to have a happy ending in Stranger Things' fifth and final season. The actor admits that he does not yet know how season 5 will conclude, but he believes that characters should receive the endings they deserve, and thinks that Hopper "deserves peace." Read what Harbour said below:
"It’s funny. I believe in a fundamental morality in storytelling, and that characters should get what they deserve. Which is more complex than just smiles. But I certainly think that Hopper is someone who’s been through a lot. I think he deserves peace, so I’d like to see that achieved.
It's possible Hopper is able to find peace by finally settling down with Joyce at the end of season 5. Hopper and Joyce have shared a meaningful relationship over the past couple of seasons, and that arc is in need of proper resolution when Stranger Things returns. Especially after Hopper lost his family with the death of his daughter Sarah, it would be poignant if he got another chance and lived a long, happy life alongside Joyce.
Of course, Hopper could die in the final fight against Vecna. He will likely be one of the key figures spearheading Hawkins' defense against the villain, making him a strong candidate to be killed off. Going in that direction could run the risk of repeating some emotional beats from his fake-out death at the end of Stranger Things season 3, but it may also end Hopper's story on a powerful note.
