David Harbour, Richard Jenkins, Justin Kroll, Steven Conrad, Jason Bateman, and stars Joy Sunday and Richard Jenkins shared their experiences and insights during a panel discussion held in North Hollywood, California, to promote the HBO series 'DTF St. Louis' season 1 finale.
was joined by his all-star cast recently at the Television Academy in North Hollywood to discuss to making the series and why it didn’t fit in just one box when trying to describe what it was.
“What’s really impressive about what Steve did with this, especially as a viewer, is that it’s presented as a murder mystery, and it’s not; or it’s titled as something titillating, it’s not, there’s no nudity in it; is it quirky, it’s not,” said series star. “He’s able to write these characters as so unsettling, human and vulnerable and flawed and unpolished, that it ends up being the special effects, the jokes, what usually is the crutch certain sorts of entertainment lean on and do well.
This isn’t that. I’m incredibly proud of being a part of this show. ”It Starts On The Page: Read 'A Knight Of The Seven Kingdoms' Season 1 Script "In The Name Of The Mother" With Foreword By Ira ParkerDuffer Brothers Reveal Billy Crudup Was Original Choice To Play Hopper In 'Stranger Things': "Everything Happens For A Reason" Joining Conrad and Bateman for a panel discussion following a screening of the Season 1 finale, titled “No One’s Normal.
It Just Looks That Way From Across the Street,” were stars, Joy Sunday and Richard Jenkins. Guests were also treated to a special performance from ASL interpreter Otis Jones of the Los Angeles Philharmonic who performed two songs including the series theme “Let the Sunshine In” by The 5th Dimension. Harbour and Conrad talked about how the show came together, beginning when Harbour brought Conrad the source material.
Harbour added that in any other hands the series might have fallen flat, but with Conrad, the way he elevated the story he couldn’t see anyone else running it.in general is it can be kind of pulpy and like a Lifetime movie or something, like ‘It’s a murder in the suburbs and who did it and there is like a sex app and everybody is up to no good’,” Harbour said.
“But the way Steve pays it off is so devastatingly, artistically, profoundly real that it elevates it. I do think it’s art and I’m so proud of this damn show. ”NORTH HOLLYWOOD, CALIFORNIA - MAY 17: Richard Jenkins, Jason Bateman, Linda Cardellini, Joy Sunday and David Harbour attend HBO's"DTF St. Louis" FYC Event at Saban Media Center on May 17, 2026 in North Hollywood, California.

The panel poured over the various characters arcs throughout the season and specifically leading to the final episode, where we find out how a major character died earlier in the season. The episode also features an important scene where Cardellini’s character Carol explains to her son the meaning behind a sign his stepfather, an ASL interpreter, delivers before his death.
Cardellini said that no matter how one felt about Carol’s actions in previous episodes, there’s no denying where she stands by the end.
“If you’ve assumed Carol doesn’t have heart, I think you start to see where her heart is and he is her heart,” Cardellini said. “Her family is what matters most to her and she is trying in her own way to do everything she can for them. The thing about the ASL, is she never partakes because that moment is so much rejection for her when he comes home and doesn’t get the job and decides to do something else.
That moment changes their whole life and she connects it to the ASL some way deep down inside. It’s interesting that the final thing is she translates the ASL for somebody that you never see her do through the whole show. ” Conrad wrapped the panel by talking about the title of the finale and how it does not just simply describe the characters but also how everyday people view and see their neighbors.
“The title of the episode ‘No One is Normal,’ if you think about it, what it’s really saying is if you get closer, you’ll know more, and it’s the distance you’ll close between you and the person across the street,” Conrad said.
