David Fry made his season debut against the Angels on Sunday and just missed a home run in his first at-bat.
CLEVELAND, Ohio — Stephen Vogt had waited a long time to hear “Loud and Heavy” by Cody Jinks play over the loudspeaker at Progressive Field. It meant David Fry was heading back to the batter’s box for the Guardians, and that can only mean good things ahead for his ball club.
Guardians’ executive outlines contrasting paths to the majors for two top prospects. “David means more to us than just what he can do on the field. There’s been an uplift in the clubhouse the last couple of days. He’s a leader in that room. He makes all of us better.” Fry made his season debut in the eighth inning when he pinch-hit for Bo Naylor and struck out against Angels lefty Brock Burke. But not before causing a stir on his first swing, launching a 1-0 slider from Burke deep down the left field line, just missing what would have been a dramatic home run in his return. After rejoining the club Saturday from the injured list following reconstructive elbow surgery in November, Fry said the reception he got from Guardians fans as he walked to the plate was certainly memorable, even if the result of the at-bat was not. “Probably one of the coolest strikeouts in my career,” Fry told reporters after the game. “I was trying to stay focused on my at-bat, but yeah, it was a pretty cool moment.” Beyond Fry’s results at the plate, Vogt said having the All-Star designated hitter back in the clubhouse is important, and a testament to the hard work he put in to return after surgery. “It’s just good to see David Fry back on a baseball field,” Vogt said. “You never know what things are going to happen when you have surgery. There’s no guarantees. So to see him back healthy, being able to help us, it’s a huge lift for all of us.” If you purchase a product or register for an account through a link on our site, we may receive compensation.and agree that your clicks, interactions, and personal information may be collected, recorded, and/or stored by us and social media and other third-party partners in accordance with our
