Veteran television creator David Chase is expanding his footprint in both film and television with two new projects that delve into the intriguing world of the CIA's past experiments with psychedelics.
The seven-time Emmy Award winner, who rose to prominence as the head writer and executive producer of the groundbreaking series 'The Sopranos,' is set to direct a new film and helm an HBO limited series, both of which explore different aspects of the agency's involvement with mind-altering substances. The untitled film, currently in development, will be Chase's first feature since 2012's 'Not Fade Away.
' It will juxtapose the CIA's efforts to weaponize LSD in the 1950s with the successful rollout of the polio vaccine during the same period. The story will center around a family connected to both worlds and is reportedly inspired by one of Chase's personal friends. Speaking at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival, Chase revealed that his own experiences with psychedelics have influenced both projects.
He recalled taking LSD in his youth and being convinced of the existence of 'other levels of existence.
' Complementing the film is Chase's previously announced HBO limited series, based on historian John Lisenbarger's book 'Project Mind Control: Sidney Gottlieb, the CIA, and the Tragedy of MKUltra. ' The series will focus on the agency's MKUltra program, which aimed to develop mind control techniques using drugs like LSD. Chase has been working on paring down the complex story, given the wealth of material available, to create a compelling narrative for the small screen.
