Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost says state prosecutions in the House Bill 6 bribery scandal will proceed - despite the apparent suicide of key defendant Sam Ran

Randazzo pleaded not guilty, claiming he was owed the money for work already performed. What secrets are Randazzo taking to the grave? Democrats worry about what secrets Randazzo may be taking with him to the grave – especially about the possible involvement of top state officials.

of Columbus. “It is a situation that is complex. It is unfortunate that we’re seeing lives being taken. And, unfortunately, individuals see no other way out than to take their own life – in lieu of justice and truth coming out about what really happened.” He said Ohio needs “a serious conversation” on what untold information remains that would drive two men to take their own lives. Randazzo, who the Franklin County coroner’s office said was found Tuesday hanging by a rope from the rafters of a building that housed a firm accused of funneling money, was the second major defendant to die by suicide. Neil Clark, renowned for a time as one of the most powerful lobbyists in Ohio, died in Florida on March 15, 2021, by a single gunshot to the head.“It’s a shame that people feel that fenced in that they resort to suicide.” The GOP representative said, “It’s a tragedy. I think everybody around Capitol Square would easily admit that he was one of the greatest experts in utility law in the state., a Republican from Norwalk active on energy-related committees, called Randazzo’s death “a tragedy.” “He was very knowledgeable. He was always very cordial and able to share what knowledge he had,” Stein said. Whether Randazzo could have provided vital insight into behind-the-scenes maneuvering on HB 6 is “certainly a concern,” the lawmaker said. “I think there’s probably a plethora of information out there that obviously made it to a situation he felt it necessary to do what he did.”Bribes totaling more than $60 million and other misdeeds surrounding HB 6 – which provided more than $1 billion to bail out Ohio’s two nuclear energy plants near Lake Erie – led to federal convictions and prison terms for former House Speaker Larry Householder and ex-GOP Chairman Matt Borges. Two other defendants acknowledged their guilt. “This is the second suicide involved in this case, and I keep thinking this is going to be a documentary one day – the depths and layers to this thing,” said Democrat“I’m confident in the folks investigating this at the federal and state levels, that they’ll get to the truth.”of Upper Arlington took issue with Speaker Jason Stephens' assertation that it’s time for Ohio to move on from the HB 6 mess. Russo said reforms have yet to be passed in light of the wrongdoing. And Ohioans are still paying $500,000 every day because a remaining vestige of HB 6 subsidizes two aging coal-burning power plants – including one in Indiana – owned by a consortium of utilities that includes American Electric Power. “We have long said that the culture of corruption here has tentacles that are very long in the halls of this Statehouse and state government. Without a doubt it took many people at the highest levels of government either blatantly ignoring warning signs or creating a pathway for that corruption to happen,” she said.WSYX reporter Tom Bosco contributed to this story.
