Gubernatorial candidates Dave Reichert and Bob Ferguson will square off in their second, and perhaps final, debate in Spokane on Wednesday.
The Association of Washington Business and Greater Spokane Inc. will host the second gubernatorial debate between Democrat Ferguson and Republican Reichertat The Fox Theater in Spokane and is being televised by KHQ-TV. KOMO-TV is the exclusive debate partner for western Washington.
Ferguson has been playing the role of favorite heading into the debates, buoyed by his top showing in the August primary at 44%, more than 17 points ahead of former King County Sheriff Office Deputy and Congressman Reichert. The latter also performed poorly in King County, with less than 20% of the primary vote, and Ferguson won Spokane County, too. Yet, Reichert had the top tally in 22 of the state’s 39 counties.
Ferguson has tried to frame Reichert as a sympathizer of former President Donald Trump and an opponent of reproductive rights. Reichert has countered that he won’t vote for Trump and won’t try to change the state constitution to end abortion access. Reichert has also accused Ferguson of being soft on crime, noting his past backing of drug decriminalization.
As of late, Ferguson has limited campaign access and declined interviews about campaign topics, limiting them to his public-facing debates. Instead, Ferguson has made appearances on behalf of his sitting office, as many candidates tend to do in any election cycle., he participated in a rally regarding a legal challenge to the Kroger and Albertsons merger.
