UPDATED: Davao City’s COVID-19 positivity rate increases

DAVAO CITY – Davao City’s coronavirus disease positivity rate jumped to 1.6% as of January 2 from an average of 0.5% reported in the previous weeks, a local health official said.

She said despite the increase, the positivity rate remains below of 5%, the threshold considered by the World Health Organization as acceptable. Positivity rate refers to the proportion of people who test positive in the reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction test. More transmissible than Delta, the Omicron variant is expected to cause exponential rise in COVID-19 cases, according to Schlosser.

She urged Dabawenyos to get their booster shots to give themselves another layer of protection from the virus. Hundreds flock to a vaccination hub at People’s Park in Davao City on Wednesday for booster shots as health officials are alarmed with the increase in COVID-19 cases just after the holidays and with the threat posed by the Omicron variant.
