Shannon Sander is a veteran who works at the local chapter of Disabled American Veterans.

A banner at the Disabled American Veteran's location on University Avenue in Rochester is pictured Friday, March 20, 2026. "Not only did DAV help me earn my benefits and fought for me when I needed that, but they've given me a sense of purpose and allow me to volunteer my time back to my fellow veterans, and help them earn their benefits," explained Sander, the adjutant of Sander said DAV offers countless services that range from helping veterans navigate their Veteran Affairs benefits, to assistance with claims and transportation, and even caregiver support.

"There's so many different things they come in for, but I think the benefits, be it big or small, or some of the biggest things," Sander said. The organization is encouraging others to get involved and volunteer their time to support veterans — not just on April 4 for "Maybe it's five minutes of talking to them in a grocery store," Sander said. "Maybe it's an hour at a nursing home. Maybe it's 'Hey, I see your kids are playing and you're trying to do something else. How about if I help watch your kids where you can so it's not so creepy?' Or you're a caregiver. 'Can I go get groceries for you? Do you need a meal? Can I bring something over to you?'" Sander said if there's something you think you can do to help a veteran, let the chapter know and they'll figure out how to make an impact.DAV Community Impact Day is a nationwide volunteer campaign created through a partnership with Sinclair Cares that's dedicated to supporting America’s veterans and their families. The New York State Commission on Judicial Conduct has ruled that a judge serving on the Canandaigua Town Court should be removed from his position. On a rural road in Stanley, a hamlet in the town of Seneca, Ontario County, authorities said they've been called twice to a home on South Street recently.Rochester, N.Y. — Police have identified the man found dead Thursday on a porch on Lyell Avenue and said his death is being investigated as a homicide.Woman accused of throwing bleach-like material onto child in Geneva A woman is charged with endangering the welfare of a child following an incident Friday at the Geneva Courtyard Apartments.
