For years the National Insurance Crime Bureau has issued annual “Hot Lists” of the most stolen vehicles in the U.S. The Bureau’s list is typically populated with several pickup trucks and a few well-worn Toyota and Honda cars from past model years, but it’s a somewhat different story this time around.
Master thieves are typically able to break in and drive off – even tow away – a parked vehicle of their choosing rather quickly, but the deal with skyrocketing Hyundai and Kia thefts is that certain models and configurations are so easy to steal even amateurs can attempt it by following instructions widely shared on the Internet.
The Highway Loss Data Institute reports that by the first half of 2023, thefts of older Hyundai and Kia models had increased by 1,000% since the pandemic’s onset. In addition to theft reports, insurance claims for vandalism among these models have also been on the upswing, most likely because they were left damaged in a hastily bungled attempt at illegal appropriation.
