We chat with Wildflower star Dash Mihok (dizmihok) his approach to the larger-than-life family drama, reflections on his career, and the most complicated scene he filmed with Kiernan Shipka:
Wildflower is a family drama, but it's unlike almost any audiences have seen. Based on the true story of director Matt Smukler's niece, the film was born out of a documentary he filmed that chronicled her experiences with her intellectually disabled but passionately independent parents. Kiernan Shipka stars as Bea, a teenager with unlimited potential who boxes herself in out of what she feels is a duty to her family.
Dash Mihok: I was doing a run on Law & Order: Organized Crime, and they sent me the script. To be honest, I actually looked at the sides mostly, so when I put the thing on tape, I didn't know that Matt had a movie about the real guy. I just took a stab at what I thought he would be like, and when I saw who the guy was, I was like, "Okay, that's a pretty good stab."
You mentioned that you hadn't seen the Wildflower documentary when you first went up for the role. Did you end up seeing it by the end, or did you have discussions with Matt about the real-life counterparts? Dash Mihok: I connected with everybody. There were some things that we had to chop, and I would love to have had more with Jean, not just because she's Jean, but I loved how they tackled the animosity between her and Jacki in the end. But I think Matt was really deft in knowing that he had these threads that paid off for everybody at least one or two times.
Dash Mihok: There's the one that everybody would say, which is where he slaps her. I had a long talk about it with Matt, and he said, "People aren't gonna like you if you do that," but I said, "Just put it in the can. Just have it, we'll do one with and one without it." Obviously, that was probably one of the most emotional.
