Anakin Skywalker’s rebirth as the Sith Lord Darth Vader came from a place of desperation. Anakin grew frustrated with the dogmatic lifestyle of the Jedi and wished to no longer hide his marriage to Padmé Amidala. To make matters worse, the Jedi could not help him save Padmé from potentially dying, while the Sith promised the power to keep her alive through the dark side of the Force.
As shown in both canon and Legends, Palpatine had contingencies in place in the event of his death, allowing him to return from the grave by transferring his consciousness into cloned bodies. While Vader may not have known the full extent of Palpatine’s secret backup plans in both continuities, he was all too familiar with the trap of the dark side of the Force.
Vader likely felt that it was not too late for Luke, however, and as Luke said, Vader was conflicted, resulting in the Sith Lord alternating between attempting to corrupt Luke and preventing him from falling to the dark side. What little remained of the old Anakin Skywalker was strongly implied when Darth Vader senses Luke Skywalker on Endor but Palpatine couldn't.
Vader Saving Luke From The Dark Side Makes Anakin’s Redemption Better The theory makes Anakin’s redemption far better, as his actions go beyond simply saving his son. It was not Darth Vader who turned on Palpatine to save Luke, it was Anakin resurfacing to overcome the corruption of the dark side while still embracing his attachments, a defiance of both the Sith and the prequel-era Jedi.
