But more than that, the Jedi says that Vader will never defeat the Jedi, so long as he hunts them across the galaxy. The only way to beat the Jedi is to make the galaxy forget about them through the systematic eradication of their practices - something that can never happen so long as Darth Vader remains obsessed with killing them.
This plan would ensure that every planet in the galaxy would stop passing down the tales of the Jedi to the next generation, meaning the Jedi would be totally forgotten fairly quickly.
