DART serves such a vast geographic area, and rail infrastructure is not enough to adequately serve the whole region. At an Aug. 8 meeting, DART officials detailed discussions about the ongoing plan to improve the frequency of existing bus routes. There are also plans to expand, DART’s on-demand service where riders can book car rides if they’re in areas where the agency doesn’t have well-developed bus and rail routes.

As transportation options change unpredictably and jobs move out of downtown, these improvements to bus and GoLink services seem like a better way to serve riders in the Dallas area than a subway downtown.Downtown Dallas Inc. agrees with DART’s reasoning as well. DDI president and CEO Jennifer Scripps said that the organization will continue to work on how to make transportation projects work for those who live, work and visit the urban core without D2.

“Plans to connect the Oak Cliff streetcar with the McKinney Avenue Trolley have long been a priority for DDI and something we recently discussed with our downtown council members,” Scripps said. DART has also been investing more in safety in the hopes of boosting ridership. The agency has hired 80 new transit-security officers. They also plan to roll out their

soon. This group of social workers, mental health professionals and DART police officers who will reach out to those experiencing homelessness and addiction and ride the system.Shelving D2 for the moment allows DART the freedom to focus on improving their existing services. This strategy will serve people better and eventually lead to higher ridership.
