The DART board was recently briefed about plans to improve bus corridors and rider experience. Traffic and a lack of designated lanes for buses often slow...
The transit agency’s new data-driven plan hopes to speed up 21 routes.towards its bus service. The agency’s new north star is for every route to have a bus operating every 15 minutes. But when buses frequently get stuck in traffic, that goal seems impractical.
A new plan identifies 21 bus routes that DART will target for improvements and eventually develop into bus rapid transit corridors. The agency plans to install special traffic signals and redesign streets to reduce bus delays. Reliable public transportation is vital to our economy. It gets people to work on time and gives them more affordable options beyond paying a car note. If implemented well, this plan might help put us on a path to solving some of DART’s most fundamental problems.
When it comes to transit ridership there’s often a chicken-and-egg problem. Transit agencies gut bus frequencies when there’s low ridership, but that often leads to the service being less useful. Often it’s unclear if the low ridership truly reflects low demand or if it could improve if service were better. It’s encouraging to see DART taking a data-driven and low-capital investment approach to making its buses work for more riders..
