Carter, a junior at Sherwood High School in Maryland, is committed to Rutgers University for the fall of 2026. Strawberry, who had a successful career with the Mets and Yankees, acknowledges the legacy his name carries but emphasizes that Carter is forging his own path in baseball.
Darryl Strawberry believes his grandson Carter, on his way to Rutgers as an outfielder, has the skills to someday be a pro.has had more than enough reminders lately about getting old. It started with his massive heart attack last March, compounded by“Carter is way more advanced than I was at his age,” Strawberry said by phone this week. “He’s got a high baseball IQ, he’s tough, and he’s athletic.Strawberry’s scouting report went on for several more minutes.
Still, Strawberry realizes the name comes with a complicated legacy, although Darryl says no history lesson is necessary. After all, Strawberry’s bio is just a click away on Google. He says, “I’m sure Carter knows everything.”The show of respect convinces Strawberry that Carter is in good hands at home and with his coaches. The support system for young athletes, even at the high school level, is far more extensive than when Strawberry graduated from Crenshaw High School in Los Angeles in 1980. He was the Mets' No. 1 draft pick that year.
It’s not just realizing his grandson is nearing adulthood, and perhaps a career as a pro athlete. That’s worth celebrating.“My arteries were completely blocked,” Strawberry said of his 2024 emergency. “I had no idea. I felt great. My cardiologist said it was amazing that I made it. He doesn’t know how.”
