Project Rabbit: Merges Dark Souls with Wonderland
Ever since Hidetaka Miyazaki and the team at FromSoftware brought our deepest horrors to life in Demon's Souls way back in 2009, we've been in love with 'git gud' gaming.
Following that, we got the Dark Souls trilogy and the absolute collosal masterpiece that is Elden Ring. The phrase soulslike was born, and the gaming industry has been churning out soulslike games ever since with mixed results. We've had quite a few soulslike games that delve into Eastern mythology, like Wuchang: Fallen Feathers and Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice.
And we've also seen storybook-inspired tales with the soulslike polish applied in the wonderfully difficult Lies of P. A tale that takes the bare bones of Pinocchio's story and twists them into some darkly terrifying. Now Project Rabbit on Steam is looking to give Alice in Wonderland the same treatment.
Project Rabbit has just been announced, and it looks to take the already nightmarish tale of Alice in Wonderland and add that difficult combat from the Dark Souls series that we all know and love. Split second frames of invincibility, enemy respawns after resting and that feeling of overcoming something significant after battling the same boss a hundred times.
Novaflare are looking to bring all the best elements from a soulslike game and apply them to a dark narrative that we're all already familiar with. Perhaps they'll even manage to rival the challenge of Dark Souls: Champions Ashes. Who knows? Rather than jumping down the rabbit hole, Project Rabbit will have you explore the Abyss of Time as the titular Alice.
It's a world of twisted realities with dangerous creatures who have been consumed with madness. You can explore alone or with allies and finding new treasures to help you upgrade are key to survival. The reveal trailer gives us a peek at a boss fight that showcases the balletic combat and grotesque world you'll soon be exploring. Worth watching while we wait for the next GTA 6 release date update and pre-order access.
With no official launch date confirmed yet, we'll have to settle for the 'coming soon' tease over on the Steam page. With the reveal trailer showing off the stunning visuals and fluid combat, Project Rabbit is already looking very promising. We've had a slew of soulslike games over the years and while FromSoftware are clearly the masters of the genre, we've also seen great games come from unlikely developers.
It's too early to tell though if Project Rabbit will be more like Elden Ring and less like Stray Blade. Worth keeping an eye on at least while we wait for a Bloodborne sequel to land. We've seen dark reiterations of Lewis Carroll’s trippy tale before with American McGee's Alice and Alice Madness Returns. While these were twisted action platformers, we've never seen a version that imitates Dark Souls.
If Project Rabbit can nail the timing and feel for the combat, this could be something truly great. Taking the world and characters of Alice in Wonderland and giving them the Dark Souls treatment sounds like an absolute winner.
