The first wind storms of the fall season don't have to be the strongest of the year to do the most damage.
Trees still full of bright fall foliage are susceptible to act as "sails" during a strong autumn wind storm, making branch and power line damage more likely. At this time of year with the trees still fairly fully leafed out—and some branches naturally weakened through the dry and hot months of summer—it doesn't take much of a gust to bring down a branch or two.We've already had some blustery October days, including just last weekend.
An area of low pressure will be deepening over the Pacific, and as it approaches, it will start to suck air into it like a giant vacuum in the sky.The easterly "gap" winds will then spill into towns like Maple Valley, Snoqualmie, and Gold Bar to the tune of 20 to 40 mph throughout the afternoon.
Once it turns the corner into Canada and Puget Sound isn't protected by the Olympic mountains, winds will also start roaring closer to sea level in Seattle and Everett.is in place for part of the northern Washington coastline and the northwest interior areas, including Whidbey Island and the San Juans, underscoring the likelihood of southeasterly winds of 20 to 45 mph.Tree damage and downed power lines there are likely after dark on Friday and into early Saturday morning.
