A look at the Arizona State football team's changing linebacker unit for the 2022 season.

Darien Butler may have departed from the Arizona State linebacking group, but his presence remains.

"He’s a baller so not having him in the room is definitely a big loss but I feel like we came together, not really to replace but to match the energy he brought to every practice," said Shaffer, a product out of Saguaro High School. "Got to have that dog mentality. He is really smart, energetic football player and he’s passionate. That’s how I feel that his teaching came on to me because he’s passionate. He loves it.

Chris Claiborne, a former All-American and Butkus Award winner in his playing days at USC, enters his second season heading the position group and admits having a season under his belt in Tempe is a relief. “Kyle definitely is that guy,” Claiborne said."I think the MIKE linebackers in our defense ultimately earn that role because they speak so much in our defense. Ultimately, 34 is going to be that top dog, and he’ll allow these guys to continue to grow.”

"We talk all the time. I just want to pick his brain about how the NFL is going, how he feels. He's the epitome for me of a football player," Gentry said of Butler, who made an appearance at ASU's practice on Saturday."They take it like it’s a full-time job. I realized at the end of the season I had to make it a full-time job too. That’s where I’m at now, even off days I’m coming in, putting the work in.

Harrison is just 18, and as defensive line coach Robert Rodriguez is quiet to remind him, should be preparing for his high school prom. He has yet to have a full season in the college strength and conditioning program but already boasts a formidable upper body.
