GAME STORY | Center Nathan MacKinnon scored twice and goalie Darcy Kuemper produced a 46-save shutout as the Avalanche defeated the Calgary Flames 3-0 on Sunday at Ball Arena.
“Third period when they were on their push, they got some really good chances — even at the end of the game 6-on-4,” Avs coach Jared Bednar said. “ made some big saves for us. So I liked his game a lot. He was sharp from start to finish.”
The Avs were missing left wing and team captain Gabe Landeskog and second-pairing defenseman Sam Girard to injuries. Landeskog is scheduled to undergo knee surgery on Monday. Girard is out approximately four weeks with a lower-body injury. “When you lose your captain, other guys have to step up and be vocal in the locker room,” Rantanen said. “Sometimes we can get a little bit quiet during the games on the bench and I think we need to try to work to be better with that.”
Landeskog and Girard make a combined $12 million against the salary cap, and if they are placed on long-term injured reserve , that number won’t count against it. The Avs, whose regular-season finale is April 29 at Minnesota, are heavy favorites to add an expensive piece or two ahead of the March 21 trade deadline.
The $81.5 million salary cap ceiling is only used in the regular season, allowing teams to spend above it during the playoffs. The Avs will travel to Los Angeles on Monday and begin a two-game California trip on Tuesday against the Kings. They also visit the San Jose Sharks on Friday. Rookie defenseman Bo Byram might travel with the Avs. He hasn’t played since Jan. 10 because of re-occurring head trauma but completed his first full practice in two months on Saturday.
