A little known cemetery in Daphne is now known to the world. It's the final resting place of dozens of civil war era and World War II soldiers, as well as slaves; a few who came to the gulf coast on the last known slave trade ship, the Clotilda . An historic marker was placed on this site earlier today, putting it on the national registry of historic sites.
History the world will now know. The marker was a combined effort to get this cemetery and those who rest in it acknowledged by a relative of Amey Greenwood Phillips, a woman who came to this country as a slave on the last known slave trade ship the Clotilda; a car dealership owner who didn’t even know what he had inherited when he bought this property; and the city of Daphne.
"When you think about that you think about the life so many of these people had to endure, It's sad. It's just so wonderful that we can recognize them, their sacrifice and their families and their descendants who are here today," said Sandy Sansing, Sandy Sansing car dealership.
