Since its inception in the 2017/18 season across Europe’s top leagues, questions have been asked about Mzansi’s readiness for the VAR system.
There are a number of issues pertaining to its implementation, for one, the fact that none of the PSL teams own their home stadiums and secondly, the hefty costs of implementing the technology. We have seen it implemented, with limitations, during the 2021/22 season in both the CAF Champions League and the CAF Confederations Cup – but there could be a more permanent solution to this according to re-elected SAFA President, Dr Danny Jordaan.
“As far as VAR is concerned, we have to introduce VAR, we have to. as a country we have to. There are a number of issues; One; the commercialization of South African football. Two; capitalization of South African football, and harmonization and integration in the preparation of our national team. “Those are three major issues that we have discussed and we continue our discussions,” Jordaan told the media.
