Former Texans receiver Danny Amendola so sickened by Tua Tagovailoa hit, he turned off the game
Houston Texans' Danny Amendola celebrates after his two-point conversion during the second half of the final game of his career on Jan. 9, 2022 at Houston's NRG Stadium.Danny Amendola — the former star at The Woodlands High School who went on to play 13 seasons in the NFL, including last year with the Texans — was so sickened byThe 36-year-old retired receiver is no stranger to concussions.
“I turned it off and started watching Netflix,” Amendola said of Thursday night’s Bengals-Dolphins game. “I’ve been in situation a number of times and it’s hard as a player to watch that happen to a friend, to a teammate or anybody in the game. It’s hard to see somebody knocked out like that. I turned it off. I didn’t watch the rest of the game. Just tried to get away from it a little bit. Obviously, prayers up to him and his family. That’s a tough deal.
Tagovailoa was sacked late in the first half and was flung down, hitting his head on the turf. The quarterback appeared to be knocked unconscious with his hands and fingers frozen in front of his face. He stayed down for more than seven minutes before being removed from the field on a stretcher and being taken to a nearby hospital.
Since the big hit, there’s been plenty of discussion about Tagovailoa being on the field at all after he banged his head on the ground in Sunday’s win over Buffalo where he was visibly staggering as he tried to get back on his feet. The Dolphins removed him from that game, but he returned for the second half and finished the victory with the team saying he was suffering from a back injury, not a head injury.
“I was actually shocked to see him playing last night,” Amendola said. “It was a scary hit he took last Sunday and then to come back on a short week? Usually when you get rattled like he does, and they see you wobbling, they’ll pull you out and you’re usually out for the next week regardless. On a short week, it was strange to see him come back. And I know once you get one concussion, it’s easier to get a second and a third one. They come back a lot easier.
