“‘Station Eleven’ felt cosmic,” series breakout Danielle Deadwyler tells V.F. “As weird and challenging and tragic as the pandemic was, it enabled us to have a certain knowledge... You can’t plan that.”
’s Miranda was as rich a role as the industry had offered Deadwyler. You could call it the chance to really show her stuff. But she didn’t see the project that way, preferring to stay in the moment, to invest in the juicy material: “The minute you put somethingit, man, that’s ketchup—that’s nasty. I’m making a sauce. It’s gonna have butter and it’s gonna have salt and it’s gonna have lemon juice. And I might throw some other stuff in there. We’ll see what happens.
She’s got another vivid metaphor for me on that score. “When something is able to cook for a long time, it comes together beautifully—it’s more tender,” she says. “If you smoke it, if you barbecue it, if you allow it to slow roast or whatever, it’s gonna be good. You don’t rush a gumbo, you know? I like that. I like the long game.” She promises this is her last food analogy.
