When Daniel Craig first stepped into his tuxedo in Casino Royale, he brought new life to the 50-year-old superspy. Gone was the quippy, invincible 007 and now, James Bond is a raw and human character for the new generation.

Over the course of five films, Craig peeled back Bond’s mythos to reveal a man beyond his signature supercars and gadgets. His portrayal transformed the character from a Cold War ideal hero into a real, relatable figure shaped by loss and loyalty. In this list we will not rank the movies based on the box office takings or villains, but on Craig's performances as the vodka-martini-drinking MI6 agent. Across fifteen years, he has become one of the best Bonds in history and probably became the defining portrayal for many audiences who grew up with his movies. From his first iteration playing poker in Monaco to his final mission in No Time to Die, we take a look at how Daniel Craig’s James Bond performances stack up. 5 ‘Spectre’ Spectre might be the most disappointing film in Craig's tenure as Bond, but despite that, Craig still turned in a compelling performance. He’s still sleek, efficient, and lethal, but emotionally, the role feels thinner despite introducing a new love interest in Lea Seydoux' Madeleine. The film is much more interested in making big narrative leaps that turned out to be unconvincing and convoluted instead of exploring more about Bond. Even though director Sam Mendes and much of the crew from Skyfall returned, the film, and to some extent Craig's portrayal, is simply routine. That said, Craig remains too talented and involved in this franchise to ever phone it in completely. He still exudes authority and control, and in moments opposite Seydoux, there are brief flickers of genuine tenderness. Compared to his other outings, Spectre lacks the internal tension that defined his Bond. It’s a competent performance, but the film seemed to end his outing as Bond on a downbeat note. It is a joyful welcome to everyone that producers Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Brocolli decided to have another go with Craig as Bond. 4 ‘No Time to Die’ In No Time to Die, Craig was given a second chance to write his final chapter as Bond. As he tries to find peace with Madeleine , he is also still haunted by his past. There’s a serenity to his performance, which was older, wiser, but still deeply human. Craig softens Bond’s edges, infusing him with warmth. With the film's spectacular action sequences, from Italy to Jamaica, his physical presence remains commanding and intense. But this time, the emotional beats steal the spotlight. In this film, Craig allows Bond’s myth to dissolve into something more humanistic. Every step he takes shows that he's aware this might be his final mission, and yet, Craig's Bond handles that with grace and style. Regardless of what audiences think of the ending to No Time to Die, his farewell feels earned. The film is a culmination of years spent playing a version of Bond that finally learns to love and let go. Even if the film’s story meanders here and there, Craig’s performance grounds it with dignity and heart, giving 007 a rare, soulful goodbye. 3 ‘Skyfall’ After the critical and financial letdown of Quantum of Solace, Skyfall decided to give the audiences a much more faithful portrayal of Bond that's much closer to the previous films, while still continuing the journey from the first two films. This is a version of 007 who’s weathered and forced to confront both his own mortality and his loyalty. In this film, Craig has fully grown into the role. He plays Bond as a man pushed to the brink, having to face his greatest enemy yet in Silva as his relationship with MI6 and M is tested. His scenes with both Bardem and Dench are mesmerizing in different ways, as the seasoned actors display their range. Skyfall is also the first film to dissect Bond's past in detail, and this gave room for Craig to explore the character further. The climactic action sequence set at Bond's family home would be out of place in a regular James Bond film, but Craig is the man who anchors the action, showing that he's still Bond even without his tuxedo and gadgets. Craig also communicates more than any line of dialogue could. This is evident in the film's action sequences and also its quieter moments. There's a reason why Skyfall is currently the highest grossing Bond film and one of the most beloved ones, it's Daniel Craig's effective performance who wears him like a second skin. 2 ‘Quantum of Solace’ In Quantum of Solace, Craig plays Bond at his most volatile. Still reeling from Vesper’s betrayal, he channels that heartbreak into raw, unrelenting aggression. His performance was entirely different from other Bonds that came before him. In this film, Bond is more like a wounded soldier on a mission. He’s sharp and brutal, which gives the movie an almost feverish energy. Audiences and critics may argue that this film by Marc Forster is the weakest of Craig's Bond films, but this is a performance that expands on his amazing entrance in Casino Royale. While the film’s uneven pacing doesn’t always give him room to breathe, Craig’s performance ensures Bond’s emotional continuity from the previous film remains intact. He turns grief into fuel, transforming the character’s heartbreak into drive. It’s one of Craig’s most physical and unrelenting portrayals. His performance in this film might be the most fascinating to look at because it doubles down on the character's reinterpretation. It would be jarring to follow up Casino Royale with something much more archetypal like the portrayal in Skyfall. So, despite many people's tendency to dismiss this fillm, it remains one of the most important films for Bond's character growth. 1 ‘Casino Royale’ Daniel Craig’s debut as James Bond in Casino Royale is nothing short of transformative. From the brutal, black-and-white fight scene to his final confrontation, Craig introduces a Bond who bleeds and feels, stripping away decades of suaveness that has become a punchline for parodies, revealing something rawer and more suitable for the post-9/11 world. His Bond isn’t the untouchable superspy but a man still learning to balance instinct with restraint. Craig’s work in Casino Royale is so compelling with how he charts Bond’s evolution in real time. His chemistry with Eva Green’s Vesper Lynd gives him depth and also a believable foundation that lasts until his very last film. Despite being set in a casino for a better half of the film, Casino Royale might be the most physically demanding portrayal for Craig as Bond, with the iconic parkour chase to the film's destruction of a Venetian building. The film also smartly uses action to show Bond's character. One of the memorable sequences is when Bond is chasing the parkour master henchman, who leaps across everything, while his Bond just broke through a wall, showing that he's an unstoppable force. With Casino Royale, Craig sets a new standard for modern spy cinema.
