) - The Gulf Coast is preparing for a significant and rare winter weather event as arctic air surges into the region Sunday, bringing extreme cold and the potential for impactful wintry precipitation on Tuesday.A potent upper-level trough over the Southern Plains is driving a strong cold front across the region this weekend. This setup has resulted in a much colder airmass moving into the area today. By Tuesday, a new trough sweeps in, supporting the development of a Gulf low.
Many models show anywhere between 0.5″ and 4″ of snow. The exact placement of the highest snow totals will be hard to pinpoint for now. More details are to come as the high resolution models come in. Accumulation of sleet and freezing rain is also possible, especially near the coast. Most models show totals around 0.1-0.5″. This would cause minor travel issues but typically would not lead to widespread power outages and severe travel issues.
