Dane Brugler Projects the 49ers to Draft OL Jordan Morgan in Round 1

The Athletic's Dane Brugler projects the San Francisco 49ers to take offensive lineman Jordan Morgan in Round 1.

Most analysts agree the 49ers should spend their first-round pick on an offensive lineman because that's their weakest position. But analysts don't agree on which offensive lineman they should take.with pick no. 31."Morgan would have the versatility to move inside to guard while also being the team’s eventual answer at left tackle whenever Trent Williams, who is entering his age-36 season, decides to hang ‘em up," writes Brugler.

I agree with Brugler that Morgan could start right away for the 49ers at guard -- he'd be a huge upgrade over Jon Feliciano on the right side, and could replace Aaron Banks on the left side next year if Banks leaves in free agency. And based on the massive salaries starting guards have been getting on the open market recently, it's fair to wonder if Banks will return.

So Morgan certainly would fill a need on the interior of the offensive line. But could he really replace Trent Williams at left tackle one day? I'm skeptical. Morgan's arms are merely 32 7/8 inches long. Most offensive tackles' arms are at least 34 inches long. Length is extremely important for offensive tackles because they have to block long-armed defensive ends one-on-one in space, as opposed to guards, who wrestle in close quarters with the defensive tackles.

Drafting an offensive tackle with short arms in Round 1 is a big risk, one I doubt the 49ers will take.
