Dan Crenshaw breaks from House GOP on border security bill

Rep. Dan Crenshaw, R-Texas, talks to reporters as he walks out of the House chamber as voting continued for a second day to elect a speaker and convene the 118th Congress in Washington, Wednesday, Jan. 4, 2023.Houston Congressman Dan Crenshaw sees “glaring problems” with a big border security bill that could be up for a vote in Congress on Thursday.

These cartels have operational control over the border and kill tens of thousands of Americans a year with fentanyl. The border security bill does have a provision that calls on the Biden administration to study designating the cartels as terrorist organizations. But Crenshaw says creating that designation will only create more avenues for people to ultimately seek asylum in the U.S.

All the negotiations are largely over legislation that has almost no chance of becoming law. Even if all Republicans in the House vote for the bill, the Senate has a Democratic majority that can stop the legislation.
