Daniel Andrews, the most polarising politician, state or federal, of the past decade, defied the longstanding maxim that good policy is good politics.
Even his resignation, which came without notice and gave the party just a day to replace him, was designed to lock in his preferred candidate and socialist left factional colleague,More than any other in recent years, his was a one-man government, empowered by a shrewd media strategy that largely rejected traditional outlets and spoke directly to his supporters via social media.
The most recent example of the latter was the Commonwealth Games debacle. Advice against staging the games in regional Victoria was ignored until it could no longer be ignored and suddenly, someone else was to blame, while taxpayers had to stump up $380 million.To the very end, Andrews was like one of those hypnotists who tour the RSL clubs with the “look into my eyes” routine.
Andrews’ starting point was to shut down everything and open only what he or the CFMEU deemed worthy even though – as in the case of when he closed warehouses that supplied supermarkets – he had little understanding of how businesses worked.When Victoria emerged from the lockdown era, he hit businesses with taxes, such as the “mental health levy” to help pay for the damage his handling of the pandemic had caused.
