Former five-star defensive lineman Damon Payne Jr. ends transfer speculation by committing to Michigan, returning home to his native state.
After a busy day for Michigan in its pursuit of former five-star defensive lineman Damon Payne Jr. , it has finally ended positively for the Wolverines. Payne announced his commitment to Michigan on Wednesday night, putting an end to the speculation. Earlier on Wednesday, reports surfaced that Payne would be joining Michigan , but his agent denied the claim, stating the Wolverines were contenders but he hadn't committed. At that time, Payne was reportedly planning a visit with USC.
Payne ended all the uncertainty with his announcement to return home. Payne had signed with Alabama in the 2021 class as a five-star recruit, ranked 24th overall at the time. He hails from Belleville (MI), the same school as Bryce Underwood. Currently, Payne is ranked 146th in the transfer portal. During his time at Alabama, the 313-pound lineman has recorded 30 tackles and 0.5 sacks. With Michigan potentially losing Mason Graham and Kenneth Grant, Payne could be a key player for the Wolverines in 2025. He has one year of eligibility remaining
