Environmental groups said almost all the remaining oil has been pumped from the Japanese ship that struck a coral reef off the south-east coast of Mauritius in late July—the damage to the coral reefs “may be irreversible”
The MV Wakashio, owned by Nagashiki Shipping and chartered by Mitsui OSK Lines Ltd., crashed off the coast of Mauritius on July 25, and began to leak last Thursday. Around 1,000 tons of fuel subsequently spilled into the crystal blue water, with the ship owners confirming on Thursday that the remaining 3,000 tons have since been safely removed from the vessel, with just a “residual” amount remaining.
Though the amount of oil spilled by the Japanese ship is dwarfed by other major oil spills, the location—the Indian Ocean island’s coral reefs, which boast high biodiversity unique to the region—increase the spill’s severity, and Greenpeace Africa warned the consequences could be long-lasting. “The amount of oil that was spilled in the area may seem relatively small, but it hit a very sensitive part of our island,” said Gardenne, referencing an area that contains over 1,700 different species,Mauritius Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth is being questioned by the public about the delay between the shipwreck and oil removal efforts which could’ve greatly curbed destruction. “We will continue to do our utmost to minimize the impact of oil spill recovery and environmental pollution,” Nagashiki Shipping President Kiyoaki Nagashiki said in a statement, agreeing to cooperate with Mauritius, whichThe Japanese company is investigating why the ship ended up at the coral reef.
