ILOILO CITY – The Department of Agriculture reported on Monday, Nov. 7, that damage to agriculture from severe tropical storm ‘’Paeng’’ in Western Visayas has reached P1.53 billion.The DA-Region 6 said Paeng damaged 180,218.57 hectares of farm and aquaculture areas.

Of these, 8,240.98 hectares have no chance of recovery due to total damage while 26,883.67 hectares have a chance of recovering due to partial damage.The aquaculture industry sustained the second biggest damage at P621.9 million. Fisheries, corn, livestock, poultry, high-value crops, sugarcane, and agricultural infrastructure also bore the brunt of Paeng.

DA-6 Information Officer James Earl Ogatis said almost 40,000 farmers and fishermen were affected by Paeng.In addition, the country’s “Seafood Capital” recorded P408.52 million in damage to aquaculture production and P22.35 million in capture fisheries production.Iloilo province logged the second biggest loss with P345 million, Negros Occidental, P227.2 million; P199.8 million in Antique province, P16 million in Capiz province, and P4 million in Guimaras province.
