Violinist Augustin Hadelich performs with music director Fabio Luisi and the Dallas Symphony Orchestra at the Meyerson Symphony Center on Jan. 30, 2025.back on the podium after a two-month break, the program comprised two Austro-German classics premiered within five years of each other: the Brahms Violin Concerto in 1879 and Anton Bruckner ’s Seventh Symphony in 1884.The Brahms had the glorious services of Augustin Hadelich, one of the finest violinists on the circuit these days.
No symphonist is as dependent on acoustics as Bruckner. With his background as an organist, his symphonies need sonic space around them. Play a Bruckner symphony in a concert hall with minimal reverberation and lean bass response, and the music seems a dry skeleton., with its high ceiling and hidden reverberance chambers, with visceral impact to its bass response, is the Bruckner hall of dreams.
If only dynamics had been as carefully plotted and proportioned as the musical structures. The first climax early in the first movement reached maximum volume, with scorching trumpets, and each subsequent climax was pretty much the same. There was little sense of power strategically withheld for cumulative effect. Still, hearing Bruckner in the Meyerson acoustics was an aural thrill.
