Permanent housing isn’t forthcoming for these camp residents, who were asked to move on before a new city program could offer them help.
Bobby Hughes, a former landscaper who has been staying at the camp, struggled to keep his tent, sleeping bag and pillows stacked high on a shopping cart while he rolled an ice chest behind him. He said he was headed to another camp under Interstate 45.Behind him Dee Brooks was still packing up, filling shopping carts with her clothes and scrap metal she hopes to sell for cash. After getting her smaller belongings together she pulled her two-person tent across the street.
Nine encampments have been successfully decommissioned so far, according to Office of Homeless Solutions director Christine Crossley. The office, together with the Metro Dallas Homeless Alliance, has been working to get as many people as possible enrolled for housing through the Dallas R.E.A.L. Time Rapid Rehousing program before sites are swept.
