The Dallas Stars have recalled defenseman Matt Dumba from his loan to the Cedar Park Stars and sent Lian Bischel back to the AHL team. This move comes after Dumba's recent injury, which has caused him to wear a full face shield during practices.

Linesman Bryan Pancich (94) holds Dallas Stars ' Matt Dumba (3) back after a brief scuffle with Minnesota Wild players during the second period of an NHL preseason hockey game at American Airlines Center, Wednesday, Sept. 25, 2024, in Dallas. The Dallas Stars are known for loaning and recalling young players almost daily to save cap space, but their latest transaction involving Lian Bischel is a more permanent move.

Dumba will return to the lineup Tuesday night against Buffalo and that the 20-year-old defenseman will return to his assignment in Cedar Park. DeBoer said Monday at practice that his injury, which has caused him to wear a full face shield during practices over the last week, did not happen in a game. However, he did not elaborate on how Dumba was hurt. Bischel appeared in eight games for Dallas, scoring two goals and averaging 13:43 of ice time. The 6-7 Swiss defenseman is one of the tallest players in the league and added a level of physicality that the Stars had been lacking. It mirrored how Logan Stankoven transitioned to the NHL last year amid an injury to Matt Duchene, ultimately securing his roster spot in Dallas. With Dumba and Brendan Smith leaving much to be desired in their first few months in Dallas, Bichsel could’ve been an option after providing a spark on the blue line. But when asked about Bischel’s future Monday at practice, DeBoer deferred comment to Stars GM Jim Nill. “That’s a question for Jim,” DeBoer said. “I thought he’s playing well. His last game might’ve been his best game here. He looks like he’s getting better every night, but those are bigger-picture items that Jim will deal with.” Nill ultimately decided to go back to Dumba, who has one assist in 19 games for the Stars this year. He brought Dumba in on a two-year deal worth $7.5 million this summer. Bischel’s time in Dallas is likely far from over, even this season. He could return to the lineup soon or at least has some more experience to gain ahead of a possible playoff call-up
